TOP NEWS
“Southwest Airlines works to address issues with new assigned seating as customers fume” via Dallas Morning News – It’s safe to say that Southwest Airlines’ transition to assigned seating is off to a turbulent start.
Customers have taken to social media platforms for days to complain about things like lack of overhead bin space and not being allowed to switch seats, even when there are plenty open.
Southwest, Love Field Airport’s dominant carrier, began assigned seating on Jan. 27, ending its popular open seating policy. CEO Bob Jordan previously said that surveys conducted by Southwest showed customers and potential customers overwhelmingly wanted the option to pick their seat, similar to other major U.S. Airlines like Fort Worth-based American.
The monumental switch was first announced in 2024. Around the same time, Southwest’s management came under pressure following an activist takeover by Elliott Investment Management.

“American Airlines flight attendants vote no confidence in Isom as carrier underperforms” via Dallas Morning News – American Airlines’ flight attendants have voted no confidence in the leadership of Robert Isom, the first time they have taken such an action against a sitting chief executive in its nearly 50-year history.
The vote was unanimous amongst the board of directors for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, the union that represents American’s more than 28,000 flight attendants.
It comes less than two weeks after the union called for new leadership.
“From abysmal profits earned to operational failures that have front-line workers sleeping on floors, this airline must course-correct before it falls even further behind,” said a statement from Julie Hedrick, president of the APFA.
“This level of failure begins at the very top,” she added.

“El Paso airspace closure was tied to Mexican cartel drones, White House official says” via Dallas Morning News – The Federal Aviation Administration reopened the airspace around El Paso International Airport in Texas on Wednesday morning, just hours after it announced a 10-day closure that would have grounded all flights to and from the airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a social media post that it has lifted the temporary closure of the airspace over El Paso, saying there was no threat to commercial aviation and that all flights will resume.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a post on X that the FAA and the Defense Department “acted swiftly to address a cartel drone incursion. The threat has been neutralized and there is no danger to commercial travel in the region.”
He said normal flights are resuming Wednesday morning.

STATE GOVERNMENT
“Attorney General Paxton, DOJ Announce $68 Million Settlement with Colony Ridge Developers” The Texan’s Meridith Dyer – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, working with President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ), announced a $68 million settlement against the developers of Colony Ridge.
The settlement addresses a 2023 federal lawsuit brought by the DOJ and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and a 2024 lawsuit filed by the Texas Office of the Attorney General in federal court, both alleging deceptive lending and marketing practices.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT
“5 council members seek formal reprimand over mayor’s ‘unprofessional conduct’” San Antonio Report’s Andrea Drusch – Five members of the City Council are requesting a meeting to reprimand Gina Ortiz Jones over “repeated instances of unprofessional conduct.”
The move comes after Jones allegedly yelled at Sukh Kaur (D1) in a private meeting space last week, drawing a formal complaint from Kaur, and an investigation into whether the mayor violated the council’s code of conduct.
City Attorney Andy Segovia determined that outside counsel should look into the Feb. 5 incident, according to city spokesman Brian Chasnoff, and the City Council will receive a report once the investigation is complete.
The council created a code of conduct in 2024 to address issues like inappropriate relationships with staff members, as well as set formal standards for how council members interact with one another and members of the public.

“Harris County to Provide Taxpayer-Funded Legal Assistance for H-1B Visa Applicants for County Jobs” The Texan’s Holly Hansen – Although Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state agencies and universities to pause their use of a federal program that brings foreign workers to the country for specialized work amid allegations of fraud and abuse, Harris County will continue to use the program and provide some legal assistance to applicants.
At the end of January, the Harris County Commissioners Court approved a contract as part of a consent agenda with Quan Law Firm to assist county employees with H-1B visa and Permanent Resident Card, also known as “Green Card,” applicants.

“Transportation leaders support ‘Hail Mary’ plan to save DART, signaling election recalls” via Dallas Morning News – The Regional Transportation Council voted Thursday to commit funds to DART’s plan to give some resources back to cities, a proposal some suburban leaders said could persuade them to cancel May elections on cutting ties with the public transportation agency.
The 45-member transportation policy body of the North Central Texas Council of Governments approved committing $180 million to Dallas Area Rapid Transit, the Denton County Transportation Authority and the Trinity Railway Express. Of the commitment to regional transit, $75 million would go to DART’s funding plan.
Randall Bryant, DART Board Chair, presented the plan to the agency’s board of directors Tuesday, a proposal to save the regional transit system as Plano, Irving, Farmers Branch, Addison, University Park and Highland Park — six of DART’s 13 member cities — near a deadline to call off withdrawal elections.

“Fort Worth City Council hits ‘pause’ on $10 billion data center project” Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s None – The developer of a planned $10 billion data center in southeast Fort Worth has hit a speed bump in the rezoning of land for what could become one of the largest data center campuses in the metroplex.
Black Mountain, a Fort Worth-based energy consortium, has successfully petitioned the city to rezone roughly 431 acres of land in the southeast corner of the city near Forest Hill and Everman.
At the Fort Worth City Council meeting Feb. 10, Black Mountain was scheduled to ask the city to rezone another roughly 80 acres of land in two separate requests.
One of those requests is for about 42 acres on the east side of Anglin Drive near the Forest Hill city line. That request was rescheduled after leaders in nearby cities asked for a discussion with council member Chris Nettles, who represents that part of Fort Worth. The other request, for about 38 acres east of Anglin Drive and north of Everman Kennedale Road, was previously approved by the Zoning Commission.

“New Texas Primary Poll Shows Roy, Middleton Leading in Attorney General Race” The Texan’s Mary Elise O’Bar – A new survey shows Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX-21) pulling ahead in the Texas attorney general race, while Texas comptroller candidate Don Huffines and incumbent Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller are similarly taking the lead in their Republican primary races.
The poll, conducted by the University of Houston (UH) Hobby School of Public Affairs, collected responses from 550 likely voters in Texas for both the Republican and the Democratic primary elections, respectively, between January 20 and January 31. Both populations have a margin of error of +/- 4.18%.

“Democrats Running for Texas Attorney General Vow to Reform Office Post-Paxton” The Texan’s Holly Hansen – The open seat for Texas attorney general has drawn three candidates who are staking out positions in the runup to the March 2026 Democratic primary election by taking aim at the outgoing Attorney General Ken Paxton, his potential Republican replacements, and, at times, each other.
Democratic candidates running for attorney general this year are state Sen. Nathan Johnson (D-Dallas), former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski, and former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Tony Box.
During a recent forum attended only by Jaworski and Johnson, the candidates sparred over experience and whether a Democratic attorney general should work with Republicans in the state.
“When you look at my opponent’s record in the Senate, he is very comfortable cutting deals with [Lt. Gov.] Dan Patrick to keep his cherished committee vice chairmanship,” said Jaworski. “That might be fine for the Senate, ladies and gentlemen, but it’s not what we need in our lead attorney.”

“Bexar County judge contenders rewrite history, talk over each other at fiery debate” San Antonio Report’s Andrea Drusch – In a fiery one-hour debate Tuesday night, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and Democratic primary challenger Ron Nirenberg talked over one another, rewrote history on a major downtown development project and cast blame over who was at fault for a faltering relationship between city and county officials.
The two men overlapped as top leaders of a blue city and county — Nirenberg as San Antonio mayor and Sakai as Bexar County’s top executive — for two and a half years.
Now opponents in a heated Democratic primary, they’ve gone deep into the weeds on past policy fights to differentiate themselves in a race where few ideological differences exist.
“We may go back and forth, there may be a lot of words said,” Sakai warned the crowd of more than 500 people at Stable Hall in his opening remarks. “But I’m asking you to look at who I am.”
Early voting for the March 3 primary starts on Feb. 17.

“Roy’s SAVE Act Requiring Proof of Citizenship for Federal Voter Eligibility Passes U.S. House” The Texan’s Mary Elise O’Bar – Congressman Chip Roy’s (R-TX-21) legislation requiring proof of American citizenship to vote in federal elections passed the U.S. House on Wednesday, after similar versions passed the lower chamber twice in recent years before ultimately failing in the U.S. Senate.
Known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) or SAVE America Act, the bill would amend the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993 by requiring states to verify U.S. citizenship and identity through documentary proof in person when an individual registers to vote in federal elections, regardless of the registration method.
