“Austin police officer shot near Zilker Park, shelter-in-place issued,” Austin American-Statesman's Tony Plohetski -- "An Austin police officer was shot and injured early Wednesday near Zilker Park following an encounter with a gunman, prompting an emergency "shelter in place" alert that authorities said remained in place as of 7 a.m.
In the initial alert sent at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said people in the Zilker area needed to "shelter in place" and be on the lookout for a white man last seen wearing a green shirt and tan pants.
"He is armed and dangerous," the alert said. "Stay away from the area."
Additionally, a person also was shot and taken to the hospital, but her connection to the incident was not immediately clear, including whether she was a bystander.
Officials said they did not know what led to the shooting but that officers appeared to have been in the area and were not responding to an emergency.
The officer who was shot is expected to survive, said Austin Police Association President Michael Bullock." AAS ($)
